About us

Meän Kaira – Deep roots, strong future

The Meän Kaira Association was born from deep concern and love for our home. Our founders and members are part of a generational chain whose roots in the north of Finland stretch back to the 17th century. We have grown amidst this unique environment, and the environment has shaped our identity – it is impossible to separate our home from who we are.

Our home encompasses extremely sensitive Arctic nature, the biodiversity of which is at risk. Climate change is not the only threat – human activities, such as the planned Pulju mining project, threaten to break the balance of this vulnerable ecosystem and destroy what has been preserved from generation to generation. This very threat acted as a catalyst for establishing our association.

Meän Kaira's activities are guided by strong values: respect for nature and sustainable development, sense of community, and preservation of intangible cultural heritage. Ancient wisdom about the balanced coexistence of nature and humans is more relevant now than ever as the world searches for sustainable solutions. This wisdom has been passed down from generation to generation through stories, customs, and traditions that are an inseparable part of the region's cultural heritage.

Our association acts boldly and creatively as nature's advocate. We understand that only together are we strong, and therefore we strive to promote environmental justice and sustainable development through the power of the entire community. It is important to examine issues holistically, taking into account both the needs of the natural environment and local communities.

Meän Kaira acts decisively and courageously to protect what is irreplaceable. We want to ensure that future generations can experience the same unique nature that has shaped our identity. Each of us is now responsible for ensuring that Arctic wetlands, fells, and forests remain alive and diverse for future generations. This task requires commitment, courage, and cooperation - values that have always been part of the survival and success of northern communities.

Join us in writing this story. Now is the time to act.
